Let me introduce myself...

In October 1973, when I was almost sixteen, I took a course in DJ techniques at the Youth Center 3960 in Beverlo. For a few weeks, we learned the tricks of the trade on Sunday mornings. My experience with speaking in front of an audience from the diction and presentation training came in handy. At that time, the records were all announced and it was quite a feat to fill the intros and still have the mix run smoothly. Of the sixteen participants, I quickly became the 'new' DJ for the youth center.

Mixing with Lenco turntables in the early seventies was done with serrated slipmats. I blocked the mat with weights, so that the record remained still - above a constantly rotating platter - at the place where I wanted to start it. There was no question of rotation speed control at the turntable (= also the Dutch name for DJ at that time) or tone controls per mix channel. It took a lot of practice to master the techniques, but in the youth center I was given a platform.

For over a year I improved my technique and learned the popular hits and artists. It was also the ideal time to observe the reactions of an audience to the music played and to learn how to get them dancing, but especially how to keep them dancing by building a set with a play-list. Playing requests was no problem because the youth club had a large collection of singles and LPs. Mixing them appropriately one after the other was a different matter.

Then suddenly the first assignment outside the home came: the Chrysostomos party of the Heilig Hart College in Heusden, where I went to school. I had no sound and light equipment of my own, no transportation and far too few records. Nevertheless I accepted the assignment and with the help of my schoolmates it became a success. The beginning of ... a long career. More than 30 years of experience

In the meantime I own a varied music collection and I know like no other how to combine various styles 'in the mix'. I provide the performances with or without my own material (rent if desired), can provide a complete program, as a link between other performances or a few hours as a guest DJ. The era of vinyl is over, CDs are still used but the step towards digitalization has been taken.

Even voorstellen...

In oktober 1973 volgde ik als bijna zestienjarige een cursus DJ-technieken in het Jeugdhuis 3960 te Beverlo. Gedurende enkele weken leerden wij op zondagvoormiddag de knepen van het vak. Mijn ervaring met spreken voor een publiek door de opleiding dictie en voordracht kwam me goed van pas. In die tijd werden de platen immers nog allemaal aangekondigd en was het een hele toer om de intro's vol te praten en de mix toch vlot te laten verlopen. Van de zestien deelnemers werd ik vlug de 'nieuwe' DJ voor het jeugdhuis.

Mixen met Lenco draaitafels in het begin van de jaren zeventig gebeurde met gekartelde slipmatten. Ik blokkeerde de mat met gewichten, zodat de plaat bleef stilliggen - boven een constant draaiend plateau - op de plaats waar ik ze wou starten. Er was helemaal geen sprake van draaisnelheidsregeling bij de platendraaier (= ook de nederlandstalige naam voor DJ in die tijd) of toonregelingen per mixkanaal. Het vergde heel wat oefening om de technieken onder de knie te krijgen, maar in het jeugdhuis kreeg ik een platform.

Meer dan een jaar lang schaafde ik aan mijn techniek en leerde ondertussen de populaire hits en artiesten kennen. Het was tevens de ideale tijd om de reacties van een publiek op de gedraaide muziek te observeren en te leren inschatten hoe je ze aan het dansen kon krijgen, maar vooral aan het dansen kon houden door een set op te bouwen met play-list. Verzoekjes draaien was geen probleem omdat de jeugdclub een grote verzameling singles en LP's had. Ze passend na elkaar mixen was een ander paar mouwen.

Dan kwam plots de eerste opdracht buitenshuis: de Chrysostomosfuif van het Heilig Hart College in Heusden, waar ik school liep. Ik had geen eigen klank- en lichtmateriaal, geen vervoer en veel te weinig platen. Toch heb ik de opdracht aangenomen en met hulp van de schoolmakkers werd het een succes. Ondertussen bezit ik een gevarieerde muziekcollectie en weet ik als geen ander 'in the mix' diverse stijlen te combineren. Ik verzorg de optredens met of zonder eigen materiaal (huur desgewenst bij), kan instaan voor een volledig programma, als link tussen andere optredens of enkele uren als gast-DJ. De periode van vinyl is voorbij, met CD's wordt nog gewerkt maar de stap naar digitalisering is gezet.
