Looking back at the Izmir International Caricature Festival 2024
From April 24 to 28, 2024, I had the honor to participate in the Izmir International Caricature Festival in Turkey – a unique experience that I would like to share with you with great pleasure.
The festival brought together cartoonists from all over Europe in the vibrant city of Izmir. It was organised by the talented Menekşe Çam, an established name in the Turkish cartoon and caricature world, in collaboration with the city’s cultural department. From the opening ceremony – complete with dancing and live music – the atmosphere was immediately good.
At Konak Square we drew live portraits of passers-by. People could have themselves drawn for free: a wonderful gesture from the city to make art accessible to everyone! Then we went in teams of four through different neighborhoods of Izmir, surprising people with caricatures at various locations. Every day was full of color, encounters and stories. During the festival, our studio works were also exhibited in the city center.
The icing on the cake was that we each received an award from the councillor for culture, followed by a delicious dinner and a pleasant closing party.
What memories do I cherish most? Meeting fellow cartoonists. Getting to know each other, sharing stories, laughing (and drawing) together, seeing how others work… It remains inspiring. Festivals like this are a nice reminder that as an artist you are never ‘finished’ – there is always something new to learn, discover or try. And that is what makes it so fascinating. The award has now found a nice place on my desk – as a lasting memory of five days full of drawing fun, friendship and culture in Izmir.

Terugblik op het Izmir International Caricature Festival 2024
Van 24 tot en met 28 april 2024 had ik de eer om deel te nemen aan het Izmir International Caricature Festival in Turkije – een unieke ervaring die ik met veel plezier nog even wil delen.
Het festival bracht karikaturisten uit heel Europa samen in de bruisende stad Izmir. De organisatie was in handen van de getalenteerde Menekşe Çam, een gevestigde naam in de Turkse cartoon- en karikatuurwereld, in samenwerking met de culturele dienst van de stad. Vanaf de openingsceremonie – compleet met dans en livemuziek – zat de sfeer meteen goed.
Op Konak Square tekenden we live portretten van voorbijgangers. Mensen konden zich gratis laten tekenen: een prachtig gebaar van de stad om kunst toegankelijk te maken voor iedereen! Daarna trokken we in teams van vier door verschillende buurten van Izmir, om op allerlei locaties mensen te verrassen met karikaturen. Elke dag zat vol kleur, ontmoetingen en verhalen. Gedurende het festival werden ook studiowerken van ons tentoongesteld in het centrum van de stad.
Als kers op de taart kregen we elk een award uitgereikt door de schepen van cultuur, gevolgd door een heerlijk diner en een gezellig slotfeest.
Welke herinneringen koester ik het meest? De ontmoetingen met collega-karikaturisten. Elkaar leren kennen, verhalen delen, samen lachen (en tekenen), zien hoe anderen werken… Het blijft inspirerend. Festivals als deze zijn een fijne herinnering dat je als artiest nooit ‘klaar’ bent – er is altijd iets nieuws te leren, te ontdekken of te proberen. En dat maakt het net zo boeiend. De award kreeg intussen een mooie plek op mijn bureau – als blijvende herinnering aan vijf dagen vol tekenplezier, vriendschap en cultuur in Izmir.
