Colosseum Rome Gets New Floor and will Organize Events Again

The Colosseum, the world-famous ancient amphitheater in Rome, will be given an arena floor again. That has been announced by the Italian Minister of Culture Dario Franceschini. A budget of 18.5 million euros has been released for the renovation, which should start at the end of next year.

The Colosseum, officially the Amphitheatrum Flavium, dates from the first century AD. As its name indicates, it was built by the Flavian emperors: under Vespasian, construction began, under Titus, the largest amphitheater in the Roman Empire was inaugurated. Fighting gladiators and wild animals entertained an audience of 50,000 spectators.

The nearly 2,000-year-old structure continues to appeal to the imagination and is Italy's most popular tourist attraction. But the Italian government wants to make it even more attractive, and will therefore have the arena floor rebuilt. EUR 18.5 million has been released for the work, the call for tenders will end on 1 February. If everything goes according to plan, work should start at the end of next year.

The original Colosseum also had elevators and trap doors, which allowed gladiators and animals to be brought directly onto the scene.

Until the 19th century, the Colosseum had a floor, but it was removed to display the maze of underground passages and tunnels. The corridors will thus be covered again, but will remain on display: plans for a new floor also include a lift that will allow visitors to visit the underground Colosseum. The original Colosseum also had elevators and trap doors, which allowed gladiators and animals to be brought directly onto the scene.

Events again in Colesseum

The construction of a floor should also make it possible again to organize cultural events and shows in the Colosseum.
